Would you like to help make a difference to the lives of families caring for a terminally or seriously ill child? We are looking for volunteers to help our North East family support team supporting families at home, in hospital and in the community. Why not join us?

We're currently particularly looking for volunteers based in Tees Valley but if you live anywhere across the North East we'd like to hear from you!

This role could involve:

  • Social support for siblings e.g. helping with homework, supporting interests and play/craft activities
  • Participating in craft/play activities with children and families, both inside and outside the home
  • Accompanying families to hospital appointments
  • Providing practical support in the family home, including domestic help, cooking and recreational activities

This role will also include some independent working once volunteers are confident.

What we're looking for:

  • An excellent communicator who can build relationships with children and young people
  • Experience of interacting with people from a wide variety of backgrounds
  • Experience of interacting with children and young people
  • Confidence in working with children and young people with complex health needs
  • An ability to empathise with families in stressful circumstances
  • Non-judgemental, warm, friendly and with a sense of humour

All ages welcome from 18 onwards. Depending on the geographical area, it may be helpful for volunteers to have their own transport to enable them to support the families we work with, but if you don't drive, don't let that stop you from getting in touch. We will cover your travel and parking expenses in line with our Expenses policy.

Commitment:

We are looking for volunteers who are able to support families on a regular basis. This could be weekly, bi-monthly or monthly, depending on the family's circumstances and your availability. Our support generally takes place on weekdays, and we often need volunteers who can help support families in the afternoons and after school, but each family is different so please get in touch and let us know what time you have to give.

To apply for this role, or for more information, please email our volunteer team on [email protected].
