At home and in the community

Jack Coogan's Mum describes how her Rainbow Trust Family Support Worker is helping both Jack and the family through an extremely difficult time.

Back to case studies

As a parent of a child with a life threatening condition I know only too well how difficult day to day living can be, caring and supporting our son Jack, whilst maintaining a good quality of life. Coping with the emotional aspect of Jack’s condition has been particularly hard for both my husband and I, as well as keeping the family home “normal” for Luca, our youngest child, despite all the health needs Jack has and all the extra equipment we have at home to look after Jack.

Bryan our family support worker came to us just when we, as a family, needed it most. I was particularly low, struggling to cope whilst Dad worked long hours to support the family. It was like a ray of sunshine when Bryan came, full of vitality, enthusiasm, compassion and a great caring nature made him a winner in the household. There are always beams of smiles from Jack when Bryan arrives and laughter around the house.

We have managed outings to parks and bowling trips, which have been a hit. He has managed to combine all the skills of a companion, carer, and playmate to both boys as well as a good listener to a worried mum. It was a huge relief that at last we could rely and trust someone who could look after Jack as well as we did. It is not easy to let your child be looked after by someone other than yourself when that is all that you have.
